Hercules Clay was Mayor of Newark in 1644, during the Civil War.
During the second siege of Newark, when the town was being bombarded by Parliamentary cannon, he dreamed that his house would be destroyed. He saw it as a premonition and moved his family to safety. Shortly afterwards the house was destroyed by a mortar shell.
In gratitude for his escape, he left two substantial gifts to the town in his will.
The New Years Day Hunt 2012 will take place on MONDAY 2nd JANUARY 2012 when, once again, Newark Market Place will ring out to the hooves of the horses of the South Nottinghamshire Hunt as they accept the invitation of the Town Mayor of Newark, Councillor Bryan Richardson, to hold their New Year's Day meet in the Town.
This event is organised by the Polish Air Force Association and will take place on Sunday 30th October 2011, in the Commonwealth War Graves Section of the Newark Cemetery.
There is to be a Charity Quiz Night on Monday 3rd October 2011. All money raised will go to the Mayor's Charities for this year which are Beaumond House Community Hospice and the Emmaus Trust.
The Newark and Sherwood District Council and Parish/Town Council elections will take place on Thursday 5thMay 2011. Polling stations will be open from 7.00am until 10.00pm.
At the Annual Meeting of the Town Council which was held in the Ballroom, in the Town Hall on Sunday 9th May 2010, Cllr Tony Roberts was elected as Town Mayor of Newark.
On Friday 1st January 2010, Newark Market Place will again ring out to the hooves of the horses of the South Nottinghamshire Hunt as they accept the invitation of the Town Mayor of Newark, Councillor Mrs Crowe, to hold their New Year's Day meet in the town.
The lights switch on will be happening on Sunday 29 November 2009 in the Market Place, Newark.

It is now time to look forward to the Winter Concerts that are held in the ballroom of Newark Town Hall. This winter sees the return of the ever popular Tea Dances and two winter Band Concerts. The events will take place once a month on a Sunday from September through to February 2010.
All events will start at 3pm and finish at 5pm. Tickets cost £2.50 and are available from Reception in the Town Hall.
This will be the 4th Newark Day and takes place on Sunday 26th April in the Market Place and Newark Town Hall. The day will include a programme of demonstrations from our local groups, providing an opportunity for groups to promote who they are and what they do.
