After the War a Cross of Sacrifice was erected in the main drive to honour these men. During the Second World War there were a number of RAF stations within a few miles of Newark and a special plot was set aside for the RAF war burials.

This is now the war graves plot. Several Polish squadrons operated from these stations and a memorial cross to Polish Airmen buried here was erected, This was unveiled in 1941 by President Raczkiewicz, ex President of the Polish Republic and head of the war time Polish Government in London, supported by General Sikorski, Commander in Chief of the Polish Forces and the war time Polish Prime Minister. Both men subsequently died and were buried at the foot of the Polish Memorial.

General Sikorski’s remains were returned to Poland in 1993. These graves are maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
