REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY

Submitted on 05 November 2020 by Helen Crossland

It is with the greatest regret that it has been decided to cancel this years' formal Remembrance Service at the Memorial Cross in St Mary's Church gardens.

The Town Council has taken this decision following extensive discussions with both the Church and representatives of the Royal British Legion.  It was unanimously agreed that given the significant number of people who attend the event each year, it would not have been possible to control it in accordance with the current Coronavirus restrictions and maintain appropriate social distancing.

The Town Mayor and Chairman of Newark & Sherwood District Council will join with representatives of the Royal British Legion to lay wreaths at the Memorial on Sunday morning.  Other individuals/organisations will also be able to lay wreaths on the Memorial Cross in the Churchyard but are asked to do so after 10.45am.  Due care should be given to social distancing etc and anyone attending is asked to take personal responsibility to minimise the potential of contact which could lead to the spread of the virus.

On Wednesday 11th November at 11.00am there will be a small gathering or Armed Forces groups marking a 2 minutes silence on the Town Hall steps, organised by the Royal British Legion.  Once again any individuals attending are urged to ensure they abide by the social distancing protocols and to take personal responsibility to minimise the potential of contact which could lead to the spread of the virus.
